If the mix CD he handed out after his 8static set last year is any indication, Jordan has an incredible talent for finding quality free stuff from pretty much any genre. Consider his tumblr to be the best thing that’s happened to your New Music playlist this week.

As for the track featured in today’s post: Generally speaking (and I’m simplifying here because I’m short on time), it doesn’t take a lot of effort to write something on a chip platform to garner praise for being “raAwWwW” or “drrrty.” — the building blocks are inherently harsh to begin with. It does, however, require a careful ear to achieve these same ends and do so with eloquence. starPause is able to strike that rare balance between a perfectly harmonious sound palette and a sophisticated composition with deadly accuracy.

EDIT: He is also a complete beast on-stage.

The Res - Recycling Entertainment System

The Res is using six Nintendo Entertainment System’s controllers. Those controllers [the chip they contain MC 14021 BCP] are connected to a main chip [Atmel Mega 16 programmed in Basic] which read and convert to midi, the signal from the controllers. The midi output from the Res is connected to a computer which run the Resware, a Max/Msp midi based software. Each controller is playing with a different sound bank. So the players can mix like Dj’s and play in group like a band

Alright so I’ve missed two consecutive entries now (work) and I’ll be damned if today is the third day. I’m going to try and make 3 posts today to catch up but, if I can’t, at least you’ll have this song to chew on.

I think this may qualify as the first “remix” (using the word lightly since this is more like a reboot) I’ve posted here. The original tune is actually a Doskpop (think self-aware, cheesy-but-epic 1980’s Italo Disco) classic from The Hardliner. You can listen to that by clicking here.

Traveling back in time a little to November 3rd, 2007: It was the first time we (2 Player Productions) were given the honor of curating and hosting an installment of New York’s legendary Chipmusic performance series, Pulsewave. It was also the first night the event began with a half hour open-mic session (now the norm at current shows). What could have ended up being a colossal, room-emptying failure was actually an astonishing success. Although I remember everyone who played, two tracks remain burned into my memory to this day: Natty’s (he was Auto-da-fé back then) “Hadean Days” and Jonkie’s down-tempo Piggy Tracker rendition featured in today’s post.

It was (and still is) hard to make sense of my strong gut reaction. With one Blip Festival and nearly two years of Chipmusic behind me, I had heard people craft dark, powerful, and evocative pieces on chip platforms before but this one had the added weight of purpose. It was impossible to shake the image of a sunglass-wearing, motorcycle-riding, anti-hero in Paul Verehoven’s 1980s Detroit, cruising beneath the streetlamps towards some final, shotgun-based confrontation in which he’ll be vastly outnumbered and might not live to see the end of it.

Something along the lines of this poster, but not in Japan.

Black Classic Controller Pro scheduled to hit the States this April for $19.99 (White version available, too). The new pad still hooks into the Wii Remote but now includes grips at the bottom and improved shoulder buttons.

last weeks databeez party at dnalounge was a blast but now i’m spending a nerdy saturday night at home catching up on emails from the tour so far and the number one question i’ve been hit with is what software to run on nds?! this what i’ve got on my are fore, ymmv and you can always hit remain calm’s (mostly) comprehensive list of ds music apps

protein from gorgull makes use of the ds microphone, letting you record vocal snippets, play them back and “scratch” them. sk1 meets turntables meets handheld game console!

it’s not homebrew but ds10 is an impressive emulation of the classic korg ms10 synth. ds10+ addresses a few of ds10’s shortcomings and ads 4 more channels if you have a fancy dsi. got to plug it here: check out the diplodocus mp3death compo tracks made with ds10 the week it was released! and also the ds10 dominator release from mp3death!

colors from collecting smiles isn’t for audio … but it’s still awesome! video-jockey frame-farmers take note: after you’ve painted your image you can export a movie of it. i prefer using colors with a stylus on nds to colors with my fat finger on iphone.

last but not least, what we databeez had running on the nds units at our lecture (for giant robot at the japanese american national museum) was gb electric drum inside of pogoshell on a f2a cart. convoluted, but edrums worked just fine in that set up compared to muddy and stepgirl which were dropping notes.

and remember … what ever you’ve got sitting around … it’s likely you can find some music soft for it … and it’s likely you can get some raw, chippy synthesis out of it! so explore, search, and have fun!

Halloween around the Organic, Inc SF office means it’s time for the pumpkin carving contest! Besides looking awesome (thanks to simon), the SteamPumpkin is interactive: when you open the doors it snaps photos and rsync’s them to http://tinyurl.com/steampunkd (thanks to dale). inside the pumpkin is a photo resistor on an arduino board and web camera, both hooked up to an nearby pc running an air application, all glued together by starPause the k333d!

ps. yes it’s a real pumpkin with dremel engravings! the software running on the arduino board is standard firmata talking to a funnel on the server. more questions welcome =)
